Yakama Mission

The Yakama Mission came to the Yakama valley in the early 1920’s.  Helping strive for justice is core to the work of the Mission in this modern context.  We do this in a number of ways.  One is trying to become more truthful with our past.  I tell a bit of this story in the Doctrine of Discovery link found in the sidebar under Website and Partners.  This leads to me to say we also strive to bring greater awareness of this history to people and institutions off the reservation, helping raise questions on how to enhance justice and freedom on the reservation.  Another is by welcoming folk to spend a week with us learning about the reservation and working on projects, i.e., roofing homes.  Then there is our afterschool program, My Future, where we use art to help middle and high-school youth become aware they can use their education and their passion to express themselves and their sense of justice.  Last, we offer public speaking opportunities.  If you might be interested in what is going on at the Mission and would like a speaker, contact the Mission (dave@yakamamission.org).

The staff writes grants and accepts donations to engage in this work.  The Mission provides healthcare for all three staff folk, two of the three volunteer their time, with one paid position made possible through a grant for the My Future program.  All Mission work is supported though donations and grants.
